Signal Corps

Below is a photo which shows some of the tools of the trade of the Signal Corps, aka the Royal Corps of Signals. A signaller is a specialist soldier who is responsible for military communications. These men performed extremely dangerous jobs as they usually worked at the front lines and thus came under enemy fire. Early in the war, lamps and flags were used for communication, which meant the soldier had to stand up outside the trench to send signals to other signallers along the way. This left them exposed as easy targets for enemy snipers. As the war progressed, the use of wired telephones became more commonplace. This had its own dangers, of course, because the telephone lines had to be laid very close to enemy lines.
