Seewant

Seewant

Seewant is also spelled seawan in some documents. It refers to a type of wampum comprised of strung shells and/or beads. As the native people did not value European forms of money, fur trade in the New World was carried out using wampum as currency. It also became the currency of other forms of trade within the colonies, due to a lack of European coinage in circulation at the time.
