Samuel Theodore Hilton

Samuel Theodore Hilton

Frank’s father, known as Samuel Theodore, was a hawker or peddler, who travelled around with his horse and cart selling pots, pans, and assorted household items. I noticed on my grandfather’s wedding registration that his father was recorded as a dentist. I thought that rather strange as I had always understood him to be a hawker. My mother believed that the hawker may well have BEEN the dentist in those days as he was the person carrying the pliers!

Samuel Theodore and his wife, Margaret Alice Pemberton, had six children:

John Pemberton Hilton 1887 – 1933 m. Cressida Morton 1918

George Hilton 1889 – 1970 m. Sarah Ann Hope 1915

Margaret Alice Hilton 1892 – 1907

Frank Hilton 1893 – 1982 m. Hannah Hilton 1918

Ernest Hilton 1895 – 1979 m. Edith Mary Morris 1920

Elsie Norah Hilton 1898 – 1983 m. Joseph Cunliffe 1918

After Margaret died in 1901, Samuel Theodore married Frances Gregory and they were parents to:

James Henry Gregory Hilton 1905 – 1981 m. Lilan Jolley 1925

When I visited England in 1977, I was lucky enough to meet both Uncle Ernest and Uncle Harry (as James Henry Gregory Hilton was called by the family).
